Get out your videotape of Love Story, the preppy look is back.

True Prep: It’s a Whole New World, the followup to the 1980 Preppy Handbook, arrives in early September. Going back to original source material, powerHouse Books is reprinting a 1965 Japanese book of photos from American Ivy League campuses, True Ivy. According to an article in yesterday’s NYT Fashion section, the first edition is highly sought after; “People spent years hunting down rare copies. They traded them online for prices that reached into the thousands. They photocopied and distributed them in design studios like fashion samizdat.”

Both books are rising on Amazon

Amazon Sales Rank in Books: 30 (was 212 yesterday); few libraries have ordered (good going, Hennepin!)

GalleyChat Tomorrow

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Please join us at 4 p.m., EDT, tomorrow, to talk about galleys of forthcoming books (if you haven’t joined a GalleyChat before, click here for details).

Many of you have unpacked your ALA boxes, so there will be lots to talk about.

Here’s some titles that may come up:

Stiltsville: A Novel
Susanna Daniel
Retail Price: $24.99
Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: Harper – (2010-08-01)
ISBN / EAN: 0061963070 / 9780061963070

This title has come up at every one of our previous GalleyChats. I read it during the recent NYC heat wave and it was the perfect antidote. There’s plenty of heat because it’s set in South Florida, but there is also plenty of swimming, boating and a community of summer homes built on stilts. No high drama or madness here, thank heaven; just an engrossing story of an “ordinary” woman as she meets the man she will marry, forms lasting friendships, and raises a family. It’s refreshing to read about good, caring people who struggle with many of the same issues we all do, but who bring an extra ounce of wisdom to it.

I’d Know You Anywhere: A Novel
Laura Lippman
Retail Price: $25.99
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: William Morrow – (2010-09-01)
ISBN / EAN: 0061706558 / 9780061706554

Of course, Laura Lippman already has a following, but this standalone is poised to bring her to a whole new audience.

Running the Books: The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian
Avi Steinberg
Retail Price: $24.95
Hardcover: 416 pages
Publisher: Nan A. Talese – (2010-10-19)
ISBN / EAN: 0385529090 / 9780385529099

This book had me at the opening line, “Pimps make the best librarians.” The author knows;  he had to draw on prison inmates to help run his library.

————————–

The Watchman’s Rattle: Thinking Our Way Out of Extinction
Rebecca Costa
Retail Price: $26.95
Hardcover: 368 pages
Publisher: Vanguard Press – (2010-10-05)
ISBN / EAN: 1593156057 / 9781593156053

I met author Rebecca Costa during her signing at ALA. She’s a real force and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the talk shows this fall.  The book’s scary subtitle addresses her central question; “Why can’t we think our way out of our problems any more?”

Russian Winter: A Novel
Daphne Kalotay
Retail Price: $25.99
Hardcover: 480 pages
Publisher: Harper – (2010-09-01)
ISBN / EAN: 0061962163 / 9780061962165

This debut sounds like a good, old-fashioned saga about a 76-year old former Russian ballerina who reviews her past as she puts together an auction catalog of her jewels.

The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration
Isabel Wilkerson
Retail Price: $30.00
Hardcover: 640 pages
Publisher: Random House – (2010-09-07)
ISBN / EAN: 0679444327 / 9780679444329

Isabel was the last speaker on the First Author panel at ALA and she had us hanging on her every word as she spoke passionately about the migration of African Americans to the North, told through the stories of ordinary people who made the trek.

Elisabeth Tova Bailey
Retail Price: $18.95
Hardcover: 208 pages
Publisher: Algonquin Books – (2010-08-24)
ISBN / EAN: 1565126068 / 9781565126060

The true story of a woman recovering from an illness. Her friend gives her a very strange gift; a snail in a terrarium

ISBN / EAN: 1565126084 / 9781565126084

Fall Galleys to Grab at ALA

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Our Galley Chat last week turned into a discussion of galleys to grab at ALA. Below are highlights, but for a longer rundown of titles to look for, check out the picks from the Librarians Shout & Share program at BEA as well as the longer list of all the titles that were mentioned.

Several people recommended the following on Galley Chat:

Juliet
Anne Fortier
Retail Price: $25.00
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: Ballantine Books – (2010-08-24)
ISBN / EAN: 0345516109 / 9780345516107

RH Audio; UNABR; 9780739384954; $40

A debut novel that comes with great expectations on the publisher’s part, after pre-empting the book prior to what was shaping up to become a heated auction. This is the story of a young woman who travels to Siena and delves into the story of her ancestors, Romeo and Giuletta (wait; didn’t they die in Verona? Appears there may be a twist here), just received a starred review in PW.

Cleopatra: A Biography
Stacy Schiff
Retail Price: $29.99
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company – (2010-11-01)
ISBN / EAN: 0316001929 / 9780316001922

Hachette Audio; UNABR; 9781607887010; 34.98

The bio of the Egytian queen and renowned beauty now has the added interest that the rights have been bought for a movie, with the possibility of Angelina Jolie playing Cleopatra.

One Galley Chatter mentioned that The Room was “all over BEA.” We’ve been hearing great things about it from librarians who have read the galley.

Room: A Novel
Emma Donoghue
Retail Price: $24.99
Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company – (2010-09-13)
ISBN / EAN: 0316098337 / 9780316098335

My own recommendations are on an earlier post, but I want to give special attention to Up From the Blue, a debut by Susan Henderson. Just check out these amazing quotes; I agree with every one of them. Since it’s being published in trade paperback, you can take a risk and buy a few extra copies for your readers advisors.

Up from the Blue: A Novel

Grisham Cover Unveiled

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

We’re trying to remember when publishers first used the unveiling of book covers as a promotional device. Our bet is that it started with the third volume of the Twilight saga, Eclipse. That made some sense, since the covers had achieved iconic status with fans.

It also made sense to do an unveiling of the cover of Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol, since the jacket art revealed the first bits of information about the plot.

Is there any logic behind doing the same with John Grisham’s next legal thriller, The Confessionunveiled in USA Today?  We can’t see it, but  hey, we’ve never been against promoting books, so we’ll go along with it.

The Confession
John Grisham
Retail Price: $28.95

Cleopatra for the 21st Century

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The bio of Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff coming in November caught the attention of several librarians at BEA’s Shout & Share program. It’s also caught the attention of film producer Scott Rudin, who has bought the rights to the book, reports USA Today‘s Book Buzz column.

Who will play the lead?

Rudin says he is developing it “for and with” Angelina Jolie.

Terry McMillan’s Waiting to Exhale was an enormous hit in 1992. McMillan, who has written several other successful books, will revisit the characters 15 years later in a sequel, Getting to Happy, which comes out in the fall.

As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, Essence magazine is running a four-short excerpts, beginning with the June issue and running through September, when the book will be released.

The AP reports that McMillan is an old friend of the magazine’s; she won an Essence writing contest back in the ’70’s.

Not Just for Guys

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

For their upcoming fall title, Guys Read: Funny Business, the editor John Scieszka and  fellow contributors tell a joke about telling jokes.

I’ve just read the incomplete galley. It’s not only laugh-aloud funny, it’s high interest reading for the guys and girls.  It has the usual suspects; gross, slimy, disgusting interspersed with truly witty fun. Don’t miss it!

Elmore Leonard is JUSTIFIED

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Premiering last night on FX was the new series, Justified, based on Elmore Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole” (which is also the title of the first episode). The main character, Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens also appears in two Leonard novels, Pronto and Riding the Rap. Both are being released in mass market paperback this month, with bursts on the covers that read “Featuring RAYLAN GIVENS, from the new FX Series, JUSTIFIED.”

The story “Fire in the Hole” is in the collection, When the Women Come Out to Dance.
