Glenn Greenwald, author of No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State, is having quite a week. On Monday, he went toe to toe with Matt Lauer on the Today Show. Last night, he explained the importance of privacy (and of journalists revealing uncomfortable information) to Stephen Colbert. He’s clearly had plenty of practice, he debated former NSA Director Michael Hayden last week.

He also revealed that more is coming. In part 2, he tells Colbert that he is working on a story, to be released in 4 to 8 weeks, which he believes will have even more impact than his previous reporting. It will reveal who the NSA is spying on.

The two titles sucking up media attention this week are reviewed in quick succession by Michiko Kakutani in the NYT.

Yesterday, she reviewed former Treasury secretary, Timothy F. Geithner’s Stress Test:  Reflections on Financial Crises (RH/Crown), saying it “provides an intimate take on the financial crisis, and in this respect stands as a gripping, if subjective bookend to already published accounts, like journalist David Wessel’s riveting chronicle In Fed We Trust [RH/Crown, 2009) and the economist Alan S. Blinder’s lucid After the Music Stopped, [Penguin Press, 2013]” But, she says it does not provide new revelations.The Daily Beast, however, manages to unearth 13 juicy bits (that is, if you consider Geithner’s daughter’s not knowing the acronymn “POTUS,” juicy).

Today, Kakutani turn her attention to the other hot media title, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State, by Glenn Greenwald (Macmillan/Metropolitan). Again, she finds much of the material familiar, from news stories last year (many of them by Greenwald himself, who won a Pulitzer Prize for breaking the story at The Guardian), as well as from an earlier book The Snowden Files (RH/Vingate, Feb, 2014), but says Greenwald’s book is “enlivened by reproductions of dozens of fascinating documents from the Snowden archive that help illustrate the N.S.A.’s methodology” and she applauds his “fierce argument in defense of the right of privacy,”

Both books are rising on Amazon’s sales rankings (Geithner’s is at #8, while Greenwald’s is at #13). Holds in libraries, however, are relatively light at this point.

Kicking off the media campaign for his book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State (Macmillan/Metropolitan Books), Glenn Greenwald appeared on the Today Show this morning.

The amiable conversation turned contentious towards the end.

New information has appeared about Hillary Clinton’s next book, to be published on June 10. Announced several months ago, as Hillary Rodham Clinton New Memoir, the actual title was just revealed this morning, Hard Choices. Simon & Shuster describes it as an “inside account of the crises, choices and challenges she faced during her four years as America’s 67th secretary of state, and how those experiences drive her view of the future.”

Some wags suggest that one of those “hard choices” might be whether to run for president in 2016.

The news arrives as Senator Elizabeth Warren is about to release her book, A Fighting Chance, (Macmillan/ Metropolitan; Macmillan Audio) fueling rumors that she might run for president in 2016.

How about an all-female ticket?

Politicians often announce ambitions for higher office by publishing a memoir, which gives potential voters two ways to get to know the candidate, via the book itself and personal appearances to promote it.

The announcement that Senator Elizabeth Warren (D, Mass.) is publishing her memoir, A Fighting Chance, (Macmillan/ Metropolitan; Macmillan Audio) has fueled rumors that she will run for president in 2016.

The book is embargoed in advance of its release next week (although a few libraries show they have received it). The Boston Globe is the first to break the embargo, saying that Warren “portrays herself as an idealistic outsider, persistently fighting the excesses and political power of Wall Street” and that, “Even though Warren has insisted she will not run for president in the next election, the book and her heavy promotional tour will keep her in the national spotlight.”

The book rose to #230 on Amazon’s sales rankings as a result of the attention.

If you’re going to commit a crime in the U.S., go for the big bucks, says Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi on The Daily Show. If you are caught, the consequences are likely to be less severe. Our jails are filled with people doing time for smaller crimes, while bankers who steal billions go free.

His new book, The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap, (RH/Spiegel & Grau) released today, rose to #39 on Amazon’s sales rankings as a result of his appearance.

If you haven’t yet become inured  to the “greed is good” phenomenon among financial kingpins, give a listen to Kevin Roose on NPR’s Morning Edition as he reveals the dripping distain they exhibit towards outsiders during one of their annual secret society events, which Roose describes as being “like The Wolf of Wall Street meets the Elk Club.”

In his new book, Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street’s Post-Crash Recruits, (Hachette/Grand Central), Roose follows eight people in their first two years on Wall Street. It seems that world has lost its shine. Of the 8 people, only 3 are still in finance and just one of them is happy in the job. Says Roose, “The sex appeal is in Silicon Valley now. That’s where you go if you want to strike it rich. It has the cultural cachet that Wall Street used to have.”

Roose writes for New York magazine, an except of his book is in the current issue.

Libraries are showing holds.

The former Republican Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist,  is running for that office again, but with a twist. He’s now running as a Democrat.

He made news last week by calling for the end of the embargo against Cuba.

He appears tomorrow night on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report to talk about his book, released last week, The Party’s Over : How the Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat, (Penguin/Dutton).

Libraries show growing holds on light ordering for The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee (Norton; Brilliance Audio).

The book has been getting attention in the print media, including Thomas Friendman’s column in The New York Times, an Op-Ed in The Washington Post, a piece by the book’s authors in the Financial Times, and a story in the UK’s Telegraph.

The authors appeared on Fareed Zakaria’a CNN show on Sunday.

Fans of Jon Stewart’s Daily Show know how often he has mined the ongoing story of  the man he calls “Toronto’s crack mayor,” Rob Ford.

So naturally, he’ll compare notes tomorrow night with Toronto Star‘s city hall reporter Robyn Doolittle, whose book, Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story (Penguin) is being released today.

The book wasn’t reviewed pre-pub, so many U.S. libraries have not ordered it. In Toronto, libraries have been “flooded with requests.” For those who can’t get their hands on it, Toronto Life offers “Seven crazy things we learned from Crazy Town” and the book  has brought strong denials from Doug Ford, the mayor’s brother.

Robert Gates’s media blitz, from the Colbert Report to CBS Sunday Morning, for his book, Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War, (RH/Knopf) has had the desired effect. The book debuts at #1 on the USA Today Best-Selling Books list. in its first week on sale.

Gates, who served as Defense secretary for both Presidents Bush and Obama. is sharply critical of many in government (an L.A. Times Op-Ed said, “Duty will go down as one of the most ill-tempered memoirs ever written by a former Cabinet secretary.”)

Dominating the media today is the unauthorized bio. of Fox News boss, Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room: How the Brilliant, Bombastic Roger Ailes Built Fox News—and Divided a Country by Gabriel Sherman, (Random House), an embargoed title releasing today.

Venues from USA Today (in which Michael Wolff accuses the publisher of withholding the book from reviewers who might be critical) to The New Yorker‘s Jill Lapore (who doesn’t explain how she got her advance copy), offer their takes. The Daily Beast‘s “speed read” comes up with “25 Extraordinary Roger Ailes Revelations.”

Sherman, a New York magazine writer, appears on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report tomorrow night.

The media blitz is working; Double Down: Game Change 2012, by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann (Penguin Press; Penguin Audio) is gaining holds in libraries, as high as 14:1 on light ordering.

An excerpt is featured as the cover story of the new issue of New York magazine (where co-author Heilemann is a journalist) and the book is  covered in many other publications from the New York Post to the Washington Post.

Last week, Jon Stewart featured an author each night on The Daily Show, sending their books up Amazon’s sales rankings.

Scaling back, he features just one author this week. On tonight’s show, he interviews Robert Reich whose book Aftershock is the basis for the documentary, Inequality For All. The movie was an unexpected hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and won a special jury prize. It was picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Co., and is being rolled out in a limited number of theaters beginning next week.

A revised tie-in edition of the book, Aftershock: (Inequality for All — Movie Tie-in Edition), (Penguin/Viking) will be published next week.
