A Coupla Self-Made Billionaires Sitting Around Talking

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

She may be interview-shy, but she couldn’t resist the call of Oprah. J.K. Rowling will sit down with the media mogul on Friday. The AP reports that Oprah will ask if there will be another Harry Potter book; a pretty transparent bid to get people to tune in.

A new trailer for the next in the HP movie franchise was released last week (check it out in HD on the official web site). If you’re wondering about future Harry Potters, perhaps the tagline is a clue — “It All Ends Here.”

The movie arrives Nov. 19th.

This Week on Comedy Central

Monday, September 27th, 2010

After a few slow weeks, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are back to featuring an array of authors, as well as a movie based on a book.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Stewart returns the favor of appearing on O’Reilly’s show to promote his book, Earth (The Book). That outing did not produce the sparks of Stewart’s earlier appearances on “The No Spin Zone.” Perhaps the Daily Show set will bring on the heat.

Boardwalk Empire

Monday, September 20th, 2010

HBO’s heavily-promoted addition to the New Jersey canon, Boardwalk Empire, began last night, sending the tie-in to #166 on Amazon sales rankings, from #366 the day before. The series continues for 12 more episodes, ending Dec. 12.

The book is an academic history, written by a NJ judge; the movie is “inspired by the book,” but is definitely fiction, even changing the name of the main character. Those who turn to the book, expecting the blood fest of the TV series will be disappointed.

Behind the Scenes:

DAILY SHOW Appearance Trumps NYT BR

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

It can now be quantified; an appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart does more for a book’s sales than a review in the NYT Book Review.

The Ghosts of Cannae: Hannibal and the Darkest Hour of the Roman Republic by Robert L. O’Connell, Random House is reviewed in the Sunday NYT BR; it rose to #106. on Amazon sales rankings.

The author appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on 7/30. The book  rose to #36 and went on to appear on the next NYT Hardcover Nonfiction list at #32.

With that in mind, below are the authors scheduled for this week:

Tuesday (today)

Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn’s book is at #539 on Amazon, well ahead of Runway judge Nina Garcia’s Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion (Hyperion, 8/10/10), at #1,426. It’s likely to pull even further ahead after this appearance.

Hardcover: 272 pages
Publisher: Gallery – (2010-09-07)

Thursday

Meghan Mccain continues her media blitz for her new book (she even competed on NPR’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me this weekend). Still, the book is at a not-very-impressive #1,274 on Amazon. We’ll check in after her Daily Show appearance to see how much it moves the needle.

ZOO STORY Coming to Colbert

Monday, August 16th, 2010

It should be a hot week on Comedy Central as Jon Stewart wrestles with Dick Armey about the Tea Party, we learn about a devastating heat wave in NYC (in 1896), and Colbert talks to Thomas French about Zoo Story, which has received admiring attention in several places, including Salon and People magazine and is showing significant holds in some libraries. Also, John Krakauer joins Colbert to talk about his book on Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who was killed by “friendly fire” in Iraq, which is just out in paperback. The documentary, The Tillman Story (not based on Krakauer’s book) releases on 8/20.

OLIVE KITTERIDGE To HBO

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Elizabeth Strout’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Olive Kitteridge, may become an HBO series.

According to the movie news site, Deadline, Frances McDormand will produce and play the lead, if the script is accepted.

McDormand is also working on a large screen adaptation of Laura Lippman’s Every Secret Thing, with Diane Lane in the lead role. Lippman’s new book, I’d Know You Anywhere, is coming out next week.
