As we noted earlier, Oprah will be announcing the next title for her book club on Monday.
Obviously, the book club and Oprah’s show in general, have been very, very good for the publishing industry. Will she continue to promote books on her cable network, OWN, scheduled to debut on New Years Day? It has been rumored that she will take the book club to OWN, but nothing is official so far.
The announced OWN programming is what you might expect, drawing heavily on Oprah protégés — Peter Wash, Dr. Laura Berman, Lisa Ling and best buddy Gayle King, plus reruns of Dr. Phil. There are signs that Oprah is not happy with that lineup; today, The New York Post reports that she is bringing in a new head of programming (an Oprah spokesperson denies the story).
The only announced book-related fare is a series, The Miracle Detectives, co-hosted by Randall Sullivan and inspired by his book, The Miracle Detective (singular), about his own investigations into claims of miracles. It is scheduled to premier on Wednesday, January 5th at 10pm. In a bit of synergy, Randall is scheduled to appear on the Oprah Show on December 30th.

It’s years in the making and it seems it will also be months in the promoting. Last night, HBO presented the newest teaser trailer for Game of Thrones, based on the first book in George R.R. Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire. The series begins some time in 2011 (some say it will be Spring). HBO aired an earlier trailer back in June.

Martin Scorsese’s documentary about Fran Lebowitz, Public Speaking premiered on HBO last night (it will continue to be aired on HBO and is also available on HBO On Demand).
The tie-in, a reissue of the 1994 Fran Lebowitz Reader (which in turn is a reissue of her two books, Metropolitan Life and Social Studies) rose to #240 on Amazon sales rankings as a result.

Author, library supporter and hilarious speaker, Adriana Trigiani was on the Today Show last week, talking about her new book, Don’t Sing at the Table: Life Lessons from My Grandmothers. (Apologies for being a bit late in posting this and thanks to Carol Fitzgerald for mentioning it in this week’s Book Reporter newsletter).
This book must mean a lot to her; she’s actually speaking slowly.

Excerpts of Matt Lauer’s interview with George W. Bush, to air this evening, are being heavily promoted on The Today Show. Bush will also appear on the Oprah Show on Tuesday, the day of the release of his book, Decision Points.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Jon Stewart will interview the current Republican Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, one of the leaders of the call to repeal health care reform. Some say he has been using his book tour as a leadup to running for President.

It was inevitable. Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series, adapted as the HBO series True Blood has been an enormous success, so someone had to begin looking at her other series. CBS’s eye has alighted on her Harper Connelly books (the fourth, Grave Secret, came out last year). It’s being adapted by Ridley Scott’s production company, to be called Grave Sight (the title of the first in the series).
It will be some time before the result hits the screen (it’s not even cast yet), but already MTV is questioning whether it can be as good as its predecessor, without the skills of creator Alan Ball, and the freedom to be edgy that HBO affords.

Bill O’Reilly appeared on The View today. At one point, the discussion became so heated (good luck on hearing what was actually said) that Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg walked off.
They returned a few minutes later.
O’Reilly’s new book is Pinheads and Patriots (Morrow, 9/14/10); Goldberg’s is, in a bit of foreshadowing, Is it Just Me? Or Is It Nuts Out There? (Hyperion, 10/5/10).
Jon Stewart opened his interview with Condoleezza Rice on the Daily Show last night by saying he heard her speak at BEA; “I was very charmed and very upset with you for charming me.”
Looks like she did it again. Her memoir of her early years, Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family, is now at #40 on Amazon sales rankings (Stewart’s book, Earth: The Book, is at #6).

This might sound like an unlikely pairing; Jon Stewart will be hosting Condoleezza Rice on The Daily Show this week. However, the two bonded earlier this year when Stewart moderated the author breakfast at BEA, and mock-threatened Rice after she finished a moving talk, “Don’t make me like you!”
