Celebrate The Bank Street Winners
Join us this Thursday (see invitation) to celebrate the winners of this years Bank Street College of Education’s Children’s Book Committee will be honored on March 17th.
Sharon Draper will be accepting the fiction award for Out of My Mind. A moving first person… account of a brilliant mind trapped in a dysfunctional body. A powerful mix of frustration, anger and humor captures the reader from beginning to end. Also the winner of the Bank Street School for Children’s Mock Newbery.
Accepting for poetry are Bob Raczka and Peter H. Reynold‘s Guyku. A collection of short pieces in haiku format celebrating boyish pursuits. Not for guys only… a delight. Sometimes rambuctous, sometimes quiet, Reynold’s flowing line illuminates the succinct prose.
Accepting for non-fiction is Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney‘s Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood up by Sitting Down. Andrea Davis Pinkney uses poetic, powerful prose to tell the story of these four young men, who followed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words to “meet violence with nonviolence” and “meet hate with love.” Brian Pinkney’s expressive paintings filled with emotion that mirror the hope, strength, and determination of the young activists.
